Perfecting Your Elevator Pitch

From JJ Ramberg:

A great elevator pitch can be the difference between a brief exchange and a second meeting, an introduction and a sale. In your elevator pitch, you have 60 seconds or less to entice the listener with what your company does, the problem it’s solving for, and the market opportunity they can’t miss out on. Coined for that occasion when you might bump into a potential investor—or customer, partner, etc.—in an elevator, it’s a quick pitch designed for random encounters.  But if you follow the tips and advice below, and give it a lot of practice, yours will be far from random.

The following are some articles and videos selected from OPEN Forum that can help you develop and deliver a well-honed elevator pitch with confidence and ease. While a couple of the selections on this list may not seem directly tied to the art of the elevator pitch, they offer great insights into how to quickly sell someone on your value proposition.

Included at the end of the list are some segments from MSNBC’s Your Business weekly television program, which I host. On the show, we regularly have a segment called “Elevator Pitch” that invites a business owner to give their pitch to two experts. Take a look and see what the business owners did right—or wrong.

And once you’ve absorbed some of these lessons, try testing yourself on my “Perfecting Your Elevator Pitch” Crash Course.
